This weekend’s Chicago Air & Water Show is an event that brings back some pretty special memories to us.
Well OK, if you insist, we’ll share the story.
It was 1982, we were with WIND, then the home of the Air & Water Show. The promotions dept, determined to get us together, had us broadcasting from Oak St. Beach.

S&J broadcasting from the WIND trailer at Oak St. Beach. Steve doing his best not to look at Johnnie’s white shorts. Johnnie doing her best to look casual.
Things were going fine up to the point a guy walking the beach with a live boa constrictor around his neck surprised Steve while they were broadcasting live. Steve knew something was up when, mid-sentence, Johnnie threw it to him and ran into the trailer.

Steve hadn’t yet realized that the man next to him was walking down the beach carrying a BOA CONSTRICTOR!!!
In spite of the fact that Her left Him with crazy snake man, this day was a turning point in our relationship. After the show we walked Michigan Ave. and, in the Hancock Center’s photo booth, captured the realization that we were kinda liking each other’s company.
We started dating after the Air & Water Show and were engaged a year later.
Cool! Cool story…now let me get this straight…. WIND and White Shorts. Water and Air. A snake and a scare. Love in the air! Got it!
Wow amazing.
Great story.
That’s a great story! Thanks for sending — and love the pictures!
You both still look exactly the same!
Thanks for posting a picture of the famous white shorts! When I heard Steve tell the story in the Land of Life After Dark, I thought the famous white shorts were, um. shorter….like much more shorter! Funny how the Theater of the Mind never matches reality!
