Johnnie’s Mom has gone HOME

My rational mind says she is gone … my heart can’t believe it.

My Mom went “HOME, home” on Friday night. She had been in the hospital for 2 weeks and finally decided time was too precious to prolong the tests and procedures.  She wanted to go home to be with my Dad, me, Steve and other family and friends.  Then, she said, she would be ready to go “HOME, home.”

We had 2 days to hug her, kiss on her, lay next to her and get comfort and words of advice from her.  We thank God for that gift and are comforted that we were able to fulfill her final wishes.  Anyone who knew her knew she was one special lady.  She wanted those who knew her to remember a day they talked, laughed or had a meal together.  She said she loved us all, hated to leave us, but … it was time.

  11. Linda Schmidt says:

Johnnie, and Steve also you have my heart felt sympathy and I know from personal experience that there are no words that can help at this time. I lost my Mom 13 years ago and some days it seems like just last week. It will take some time but gradually you stop feeling like an orphan, that’s what I felt like and I was 51 yrs old. Only those who have been through it truly understand.
Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Love, Linda

  12. Karen James says:

    Johnnie-
Prayers are with you and your family. No matter our ages, we are never ready to lose a parent. I lost my Mom when she was 51, but I know she is looking over me and our family every moment of every day. I’ll be with her again in that perfect utopia she now calls home, when my time on this earth is done.
It sounds like you had a wonderful relationship with your Mom and appreciated every moment with her. That’s what this part of our journey is all about.
Again my prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time.

  13. My sympathies, my comfort. She is home now.

  14. Julie Burke says:

    Johnnie,

I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I lost my mom 10 years ago and it is such a wrench. The mother-daughter relationship is one unlike any other; it’s so primal. You will miss her for a very long time but she will always be with you in your heart and the lives of all those she touched. How wonderful that you were able to bring her home from the hospital to die where she wanted to and that you had those special two days with her. They will be with you and comfort you forever. Please also be comforted by knowing that you were a great and loving daughter.

I love this passage by Angelo Patri.
“In one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond her departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you, that spirit looking out of other eyes, talking to you in the familiar things she touched, worked with, loved as familiar friends. She lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew her.”

Concidentally, my dad also died on January 27th. Please take care of yourself.

    Julie Burke

  15. Peggy vaughan says:

So sorry…it took me a few minutes to realize that you really meant…home and then…..Home..as in Home…I had hoped you meant home with you, rather than the Lord. But glad that you got to say a fond farewell to your Mom. Those of us, your steady listeners, felt as if we knew her, and grieve her loss with you.My sincere sympathy to you and your family.

  16. Karen Schulz says:

I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a mom is about as hard as it gets, I lost mine almost 12 years ago, and its like yesterday, but she felt it was time and chose to leave. I have to hold onto the good memories and I couldn’t wish her back, but oh God, how i miss her. I will be purring quietly for all of you. Know how much she and all of you mean to those of use who lived on your side of the clock for so many years.

  17. John Schultz says:

  19. Kerry Bailey says:

My thoughts and prayers to you and to your family.

  20. Sue Black says:

Congratulations to Mom for knowing when the time was right. Funny how some people just know and are ready. I was a hospice nurse. I found people died usually the way that they lived which says bunches about your mom. Take time to grieve, to feel. The normal person on the street believes grief is over in 2 weeks and you are expected to carry on as usual. It is not. Allow yourself to feel whatever it is you feel. God bless each of you as you enter a new journey.

  21. Sue Beyer says:

Johnnie: May she rest in Peace and Rise in Glory. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. I know how much you will miss her.

    Johnnie,
I am so very sorry for you. I know this is very difficult. Please know that even though your mom isn’t physically with you, she is not in pain and will always be with you in your head and heart. My husband is still with me and it has been 7 years since he went home but not a day goes by that I don’t cherish the time we spent together. Be kind to yourself as grief is a process and know that it does get better and easier to breathe. Take all the time you need. Just get through one day at a time and know that I am sending you hugs and love to you and your family. Another star has been added to the sky, In sympathy and understanding,
A longtime, night time, fan of you and Steve. You seem like family to
me and thank you for letting me know about your mom. I will keep you all

  44. Linda Sue says:

    Dear Johnnie,
Remember her hugs, remember her love.
Only her spirit is now up above.
Her caring and smiles will stay with you here.
Remember her smiles and her tender care.

When my mama died, I kept seeing a smiley face everywhere. I would cut a potato open there would be brown spots in a smiley face design. Smiley faces would show up unexpectedly and it was like a hug from my mama letting me know I was still loved. The smiley faces dwindled but I still miss my mama. These next few days you will hear stories about how special your mom was. Please write these stories down because it will be hard to remember all of them.
I also remember that when my mama died, I knew that it was God’s timing for her, and when it is God’s time to go home, there is no arguing with that.
Steve, I know she was special to you too. My condolences. Take care!

Alas I saw this coming: I hoped I was wrong. I was coming awake as the Bill Leff show got underway and his report of your news seeped into groggy awareness. Joyce was a warm and hospitable presence at WGN events–much more than a bonus along with your dad. For you and all your kin, hugs and prayers.

  124. Laura D says:

This is so bitter sweet~ When you and Steve lost your night spot on WGN it reminded me of the one time in my life I was let go from a job. I have been a CNA taking care of others for my entire life and was let go due to the fact I reported resident abuse. It took me months of walking the floors at night trying to shake the feeling. I however always believed God does everything for a reason. My Mom was at the time ill and being let go allowed me to spend time with her daily doing just what you did Johnnie. The day before Mom went home I got the news I was hired at Christ hospital once again able to do what I do best taking care of others. I was able to walk into Mom’s hospital room and tell her not to worry I got a job. The only things is we were getting ready to take her home to her house so she could pass where she felt comfortable and she passed the night before she came home. So you see Johnnie God does do everyting for a reason it makes no sence what happened to either of us however the one we love most in life bennifited. I will continue to work and take care of others and if I ever see someone being abused I will hold my head high and report it~
My prayers are with you. IT is WGN’s loss your Mom won!

  134. Mark says:

Loss of a parent is one of the hardest things we have to do in life. I lost my dad several years ago, and it takes a long time to get over the fact that they are no longer with us. You and your family will overtime get past these sad times, and remember the good times. I know both you and Steve had a very close relationship with Johnnies mom, it showed in EVERYTHING you did and said. Johnnies mom is heaven looking down and saying “Yeah, it’s OK to be sad for a while; but always remember that we WILL see each other again.”

May God bless you in this time of grief…. watch over you and comfort you. Your mom will be added to my prayer list.

    Always Praying

    Mark

I’m so sorry for your loss my prayers are with you and your family.

  139. No matter how old we get Johnnie, losing our mother is the worst. I lost mine at 22. 44 years later I still miss her and ask her advice at times. I miss you and Steve’s show so much. I moved to TX from the midwest a year ago and WGN was my favorite and only radio station I listened to. Then Ron died in Dec., then I moved in Jan. I could still listen to WGN at night thru a skip wave, I guess, on my radio and hearing you both on the show made me feel not so homesick. Then, WGN goes crazy, gets rid of people, you both leave……I’m just…well, I don’t know, sad I guess. Best of luck to you both, and Johnnie your mom is up there now, in no pain, watching over you and she’s where we all want to go. I’ve kept that in my mind the last 44 years about my mom. My sympathies…

    • Susan says:

Marianne, what I nice person you are. I,too, feel as you. I lost my Mom in 1998, and it still seems as yesterday! I am new to this group and normally do not chat online. I was so moved by your generous comments to our Johnnie and I ache for her as well. Was not WGN the best? Then they did what they did; money is a problem for the so-called management. Well, Jack Paar and I never listened to a radio program or TV program we did not like!
I do so wish you well.

  140. Paul says:

Johnnie: I am so very sorry to hear this. I too was an only child, so I know how close this relationshilp is.

From listening to you & your husband on WGN for all the years you were there, I heard you talk of your mom & things you did together. It always reminded me of what my mom meant to me, times it made me sad, then other times it brought a smile as I remembered the same things we shared.
Your mother loved you with all her heart and she was proud of the woman you became. You were a good daughter. Hold on to those thoughts.

My husband and I will pray for God to give you strength. Now your dad needs you to be strong.

Johnnie, you do many things every day, random acts of kindness, being polite when you don’t have to, etc., because, like me, “my mom raised me right.” Next time it happens, take a second and consider it a blessing you’re keeping her spirit alive. It helps me every day. I hope it helps you, Steve and the rest of your family. Good thoughts coming your way from North Carolina. Alan
